Stomach Fat Myths and Legends
What are the main stomach fat myths? Like many aspects of bodily change, the onset of
stomach fat can be misconstrued to take on false meanings. Attributing its formation can often be an attack
on the character or behavior of the individual. Many of the so-called reasons behind the formation of stomach
fat are false and should not be taken seriously if they cause emotional harm.
The following is a list of some of the stomach fat myths and legends:
• Stomach Fat Indicates Excessive Alcohol Consumption: The presence of a “beer belly” is considered in many
circles to indicate a dependence on alcohol consumption. This has been scientifically proven to be a
falsehood. While alcohol is naturally a high-calorie food, it is not a direct cause of stomach fat
formation. Instead, overweight individuals with stomach fat often take on excess calories and subsequent
weight gain as a result of alcohol consumption.
• Individuals With Excess Stomach Fat Are Overweight: While a portly stomach is often a consequence of
overall weight gain, not all individuals with portend abdomens are necessarily overweight. In some instances,
genetics and body malformations can cause healthy amounts of fat to be distributed to the stomach region despite an
overall healthy weight. This can cause a misperception of the individual as generally overweight.
• Stomach Fat Indicates Laziness: Obesity in general is considered an indication of a person’s overall
activity level. Stomach fat, in particular, is cited as an indication a person is less than motivated in
leading their life. However, disorders and genetic dispositions can lead to weight gain. Sometimes,
very active individuals suffer undeserved prejudice due to excess stomach fat.
• More stomach fat myths. People Of “xxx” Ethnicity Always Have Stomach Fat: The sumo wrestler and other
cultural archetypes often have large amounts of abdominal fat. Stereotypes meant to degrade people of certain
nationalities have also taken root in popular culture. However, no scientific evidence has linked the
existence of stomach fat to a particular ethnic group.
• If Someone Has Excess Stomach Fat, Their Children Will Too: Though genetics is one cause for excess
stomach fat, overall obesity is the ultimate culprit when it becomes a visible part of one’s appearance. No
evidence exists to suggest an obese parent will only give birth to children who will also eventually become
overweight.
Hopefully, disproving some of these stomach fat myths and legends has helped to change your overall outlook on
excess stomach fat.
